Introduction

We had an introduction by Vinay, highlighting the history and significance of wikipedia. H P Nadig spoke about the wiki movement. Mr. Nadig mentioned about the different projects taken up by wikimedia foundation.

We had a break and celebrated the Wikipedia's 10th anniversary with Mysorepak from Guru sweets.

We had an introduction on 10th anniversary Wikipedia(16-01-11) by Mr.Kiran and Mr.Pavanaja. One is working on wiktionery and another is on Wikipedia/Kannada respectively.

Kannada Wikipedia

Pavanja U B Introduced Kannada wikipedia and explained the working of the Kannada editor using a few examples.

He also answered for some questions. Question like there were raised, its difficult to type in kannada using english-keyboard. Pavanaja answered by giving example of a librarian & a kannada enthusiast of TIFR, who digitized many books Muddana of just by typing them in kannada with the available complex kannada transliteration tool at that time. With the help of that digitized material he generated a glossary & unique charecters of his writings like, how mudanna refers LORD RAMA in his books. Later this was used to identify new found books during excavation, having the same charecteristics of mudanna. Now pavanaja added -now advanced kannada tools are more & we need to just digitize.

Kiran spoke on wiktionary and demonstrated use of Kannada wiktionary.

Creative Commons

Lokesh had a presentation on creative commons. The main points of the presentation were the myths about both copyright and 'creative commons' which usually persist in users and reality behind those myths. Various terms and terminologies of creative commons were discussed . These included:

Attribution No Derivatives (CC-BY-ND)
Attribution Non-Commercial (CC-BY-NC)
Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike (CC-BY-NC-SA)

He enlightened every one about the often overlooked issue of copyright when we copy content from Wikipedia or Google.

One assumes that material on Wikipedia must be free of copyright issues, but its not true. Wikipedia supports creative commons license which comes in six flavors with varying degree of freedoms.

Look out for the creative commons license of an article before copying it or redistributing it.

Panel Discussion

H P Nadig moderated a panel discussion. Dr Pavanja, Dr Chidananda Gowda, Lokesh, Kiran and Rakesh were in the panel.

1. How to attract More Users and Contributors as voluntaries to Kannada Wikipedia?

A. Propagate by: News Editors, Collage Students/Projects submations, Classroom articals, Public programmes.

Wiki reader

The new wiki reader(text-only) which was introduced by HPN looked sleek, handy mobile device. It can be used as a mobile device which can show the wiki pages without connecting to the internet. It will have to be updated by flash drives or by connecting to the internet.

T-Shirt

Distribution was held and everyone got a T-shirt containing Wikipedia logo and the celebration of 10 years of Wikipedia

Colours choice: Blue, Gray and Black...

Lunch

Later everyone got a great lunch containing Pakoda, Mysorepak, Poori and curry, Bisibelebath and Curdrice; all these on a plantain leaf.

Contributors were added by creating accounts on wikipedia. First time users learnt the editing basics.
